Appealing to the public in press conference on May 22nd in Chengdu, Lieutenant Governor of Sichuan Province said, “We urgently need tents. If anything you want to donate, donate tents!” The 8 magnitude earthquake has left 5 million people homeless. It will take many months before some temporary housing can be set up for all places. The situation calls for urgent action from all of us. The Northern California Chinese 512 China Earthquake Relief (http://www.ncc512.org) is now organizing a tent/sleep bag donation drive after raising more than $160,000 in its first week of fund-raise drive. “Our mission is to help whatever they need, now they ask for it, we will respond”, said Charles Mu, President of the Northern California Sichuan Folks Association, who is also coordinating NCC512’s donation activities, “please donate your tents and sleeping bags, any size helps. Or if you want to donate cash, just purchase tents for us. We’ll arrange to ship them to the disaster area in the shortest possible time. Ask your friends, co-workers and others to help. We need to make it happen before rain season in Sichuan begins”, said Sam Liu, President Guizhou Overseas Promotion Association, a member organization of NCC512. The quantity of tents/sleeping bags they have received has reached 8 tons, so they decide not to continue accepting donation tomorrow (Sunday). United Airline has agreed to fly these goods to China for free. There might be some arrangements of the amount and timing with the airline. So the decision (of stop accepting earlier) may partially reflect that arrangement. If you have already got the tent/sleeping bag, but had not dropped them, please try to call Zhang Wen (415-812-6828) this evening.
