   A letter to Synapse [Ô´´]
Õª×Ô ¼ÓÖÝ´óѧÂÛ̳¾É°æ (Universities in California Bulletin Board System)  duan  2008-04-11 17:24
I wrote this as an opinion article and sent it to Synapse, the student paper at UCSF.....

The April 9th Olympic Torch Relay turned out to be another event in which the politicians played both the protesters and supporters alike. It is regrettable that most people who stood on the streets didn¡¯t even get a glimpse of the torch. As a Chinese American, I was one of the tens of thousands of supporters, who started the day before the sun even came up. And I would like to share the supporter side of the event, instead of all the negative portrayal from bulk of the media.

Since London and Paris, the Bay Area Chinese community has really pulled together and calls went out for a large turnout to demonstrate Chinese unity and our support of the games. Most of the Bay Area Chinese Americans who I met on the street didn¡¯t even consider taking most of the day off to cheer on the torch relay. However, the disturbing images in London and Paris truly struck a chord in the hearts of people with Chinese descent. Many were angry at the yellow journalism, highlighting only the protesters and completely ignoring the supporters. The ¡°news¡± never seemed to show how violent the protesters have become. When is assaulting a person not a crime, anywhere, anytime?

Right before the planned relay start time, the supporters outnumbered the protesters at least 10:1, but you¡¯ll never find it on any news report. Very few wide-angle or aerial photos were shown to conveniently ignore the sea of supporters in red. But numerous front and center, zoomed-in shots of protesters can be seen everywhere. I am extremely disappointed at the supposedly unbiased news organizations in our great nation. Comments in many articles like the SF Chronicle story will tell you that the Chinese government planned the whole thing and bused in loads of Chinese students. On the contrary, most of these people are American citizens who rented buses or took public transit to get into the city. Yes, we were out there, trying to drawn out all of the protesters because the media groups continued to ignore anything pro-Chinese. Do you wonder why every time China is mentioned, the word, Communist is always in front of it? But you never see Capitalist America or Capitalist Great Britain. Why? Is it to create fear and to generate a negative image?

Instead of pushing China towards better human rights, the Olympic torch event is now seen as a battle between the Chinese people and anyone who are against them. It has created an unbridgeable chasm between the Tibetans and the Chinese (including the other 55 minorities in China). Bitter hatred is now the feeling. I have witnessed first hand how ethnic hatred is created. Reconciliation is not made in such ways. This is extremely disturbing.

What saddens me even more is that many of the protesters have no idea what is really going on, except they know FREE is good, and Communist is bad. Many don¡¯t even know where Tibet is nor that ethnic minorities in China enjoy certain privileges like having more than 1 child per family and affirmative action for college entrance. The Chinese government has serious shortcomings but they are evolving for the better. Putting them down at every corner only hardens their position. Furthermore, the Western media has taught them a valuable lesson in open but distorted news reporting. Many of you probably don¡¯t know, but now, people in China are free to surf BBC and CNN websites. Why? The controlled Chinese media has completely discredited those news organizations. The situation is no longer seen as protests against the Chinese government, but an assault on the Chinese people.

I would like to take this chance to implore people to rethink their strategies and let the Olympics games do what it is supposed to do¡ªto bring people around the world together!
